Ava storms out of the restaurant. I throw some money on the table and tell Chloe and Luke I’m sorry. Looks like they’ll have dinner by themselves tonight.

Outside the restaurant, I look around and see her heading to the park across the street. Weaving through cars, I can’t help but realize how lame my apology must have seemed compared to all she went through. It was as if my deceit was the starting point to her whole life crumbling. Her parents weren’t the greatest to begin with, but they were together. The rumors were all over town about her mom. Trailer trash was a common name for her, but not Ava. I hadn’t let anyone call her that, and even though my parents were rich and hers were poor, I had sheltered her from as much heartache of that as I could.

Until that night.

Too much to drink and goaded by Eddie, I was stupid to throw away the best friend I’d ever had. Ava and I had always talked about everything—including how she wanted to save herself for marriage, something her mom hadn’t done. I had been fully on board.

Until I wasn’t.

As I catch up to Ava, I try to keep in step with her even though she’s trying to pick up speed. I try to grab her hand but she snatches it away. So I run in front of her and try to stop her.

“Ava, please. Please hear me out. I really am truly sorry. I was a stupid boy. I hurt you and—”

“Hurt me? You did more than that. You hurt us.” And as she says it I know it’s the truth. I completely destroyed all the dreams we’d ever talked about. We’d been friends since grade school and then become boyfriend girlfriend when we were fourteen. It was as if we didn’t want to ruin our friendship but we knew there was something more between us.

Until Id’ destroyed it.

“You’re right.”

She stops, mainly because I’m standing in front of her, although she’s not trying to get around me. Ava’s chin raises as she sniffles.

“I ruined everything that was between us. I broke apart everything we had. I’ve regretted that.” I take her hand in mine. “I really have missed you. I’ve missed us.”

It was actually the truth. As much as I had tried to push Ava to the corners of my mind, every woman I’ve been with since hasn’t matched up or compared to what we had.

“What I did to you was wrong and—”

Ava is no longer paying attention to me. It shouldn’t surprise me; she was always like that. Like a dog watching a squirrel dart around. When I follow her gaze, I realize it really is a dog she’s watching. He’s small and straggly. Really dirty looking and sniffing around the dumpster.

Ava opens her purse and pulls out a Ziploc bag. She starts to walk away from me, toward the dog, and squats down.

“Ava, you really shouldn’t—” I start to warn her, but the dog is drawn to her slowly.
